Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
