TikTok Grants The Community Control to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform announced that it presently contains more than 1 billion content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is being tested over the following weeks before a global launch. This development coincides with a surge in AI-generated material, fueled by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform only show AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users enjoy content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own preferences,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The platform disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, over 100 million videos are added to the platform daily, making AI content a limited portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they view by opening the “manage topic” feature in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be modified under the setting encompass news, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s rules oblige users to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of public figures or emergencies. Any believable AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the platform will from now on attach an artificially created watermark to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to deter users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is furthermore introducing a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit non-profit groups specializing in teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, during discussion over plans to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. The company is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by staff. The company announced a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by human moderators over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
